Gotts Surname Family History

HomeNewsStoriesWar, Crime & moreAbout the nameFamilies

This website tells the family history stories for anyone with the surname GOTTS. Although some think it is of German origin, it originated in Norfolk, England in the 1300's.  It then spread up the NorthEast coast, to London and to Canada, USA and Australia.  Did you know it means:

“ a person who lived by water or a watercourse”

It comes through the Danish and Viking settlements along the East coast of Britain, and the surname appears as ‘GOTT’ in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, but there is no sign of any direct link between the groups.
